This Shortcutz Porto session will be moderated by the artist Sama and we will have several guests with very diverse films and strong themes. Brazilian director Alexandre Siqueira will be at Shortcutz to present his animated film, “Purple Boy”, a short film with Portuguese production that addresses the issue of gender identity based on the story of Oscar, a transgender boy. “Purple Boy”  won over 20 film festivals. Sara N Santos returns to Shortcutz, this time to present her latest film, "Just Like The Films", a film that mixes her grandfather's memories with film noir images, an amalgamation that results in a love letter to her grandfather and to the cinema. Alexander Schaef, a young Californian artist will also be present with the performance video, “MOMMY's TEN-INCH BALL-SACK SS21”, a work that will not leave us indifferent to the artist's approach to the role of the family nucleus in consumer society and in particular, his relationship with his own mother.

Shortcutz Porto is curated by Luísa Sequeira and is held in partnership with Saco Azul and Maus Hábitos.

O TEN-INCH BALL-SACK SS21 da mamãe é um desfile de alta costura de vanguarda da mente de Alexander Schaef; é uma paranóia severa e violenta - algo quase uma serpente, quase sua pele morta. Cheio de referências diretas e íntimas à automutilação, ciclos [familiares] de doença e trauma, uma animosidade e inveja em relação às artes e ao diálogo intelectual inteiramente, uma vaga, mas esmagadora, culpa / vergonha relacionada à identidade e os mecanismos autodestrutivos que instalamos para lidar com essas emoções extremas, a 'MOMMY Collection' funciona como um instrumento que dá sinfonia à agonia. Nós sentimos a doença se infiltrando através da luz [mais leve], vimos o terror gotejar nos rostos dos entes queridos, nos sentimos feios, miseráveis e estúpidos [e, em geral, sem valor!]! A essência de 'mamãe', por sua vez, ridiculariza essa inutilidade, a inutilidade que consome a sociedade, mas é mantida oculta devido a entendimentos convencionais e irracionais de status e propósito divino, de uma forma validante, mas decrescente, ao ponto surpreendentemente alcançável da obscenidade & paródia. Ao perverter a própria destruição e desviar a "experiência humana" de algo que une todas as pessoas através do sofrimento coletivo para algo que é completamente ridículo (e, portanto, não merece atenção alguma), o TEN-INCH BALL-SACK SS21 da mamãe esmaga feito pelo homem espectros de sucesso e realização, substituindo-os por um vazio complexo, embora reconfortante, metaforicamente carregado, mas absolutamente absurdo, vasto, vasto. Este desfile serve tanto como um pedido de ajuda quanto como uma crítica ao público; OLHE O QUE VOCÊ ME FEZ! …

MOMMY’s TEN-INCH BALL-SACK SS21 is an avant-guarde haute-couture fashion show from the mind of Alexander Schaef; it is a severe and violent paranoia -- something almost a serpent, almost its dead skin. Suffused with blunt and intimate references to self-harm, [familial] cycles of of illness & trauma, an animosity and envy towards the arts and intellectual dialogue entirely, a vague yet overwhelming identity-related guilt/shame, and the self-destructive mechanisms we install to cope with such extreme emotions, the ‘MOMMY Collection’ serves as an instrument that gives symphony to agony. We’ve felt the illness seep through the [lightest] light, seen the terror drip down faces of loved ones, felt ugly and miserable and stupid [and overall worthless!]! The essence of ‘Mommy,’ in turn, ridicules this worthlessness, the worthlessness that consumes society but is kept hidden due to conventional and irrational understandings of status and divine purpose, in a validating yet diminishing way, to the surprisingly attainable point of obscenity & parody. By perverting destruction itself, and flipping the “human experience” from something that unites all people through collective suffering to something that is completely ridiculous (and therefore deserving of no attention at all), MOMMY’s TEN-INCH BALL-SACK SS21 smashes man-made spectrums of success and fulfilment, replacing them with a complex yet comforting, metaphorically-charged yet absolutely absurd, vast, vast emptiness. This runway show serves as both a cry for help and a criticism of the audience; LOOK AT WHAT YOU MADE ME DO!..
