Light is the thing that makes things visible.

For each of us reality reveals itself as a combination of fragmented moments, an ever shifting present. A multiplicity of viewpoints that is not taken but assumed, transient to itself, neither real nor unreal. In Praise of Shadows is a silent suite of luminal art in space performed by the light instrument 9:1. The experience consists of five movements that unfold over a period of 30 minutes. The composition is informed by the dark adaptation phenomenon that occurs in the human eye and profoundly inspired by the essay of the same name written in 1933 by Japanese novelist Jun'ichirō Tanizaki.

Nerea Castro works across a variety of media that include photography, video, drawing and sculpture. Employing a subtly minimalist aesthetic that encourages the viewer to consider their own identity as well as the existence of other viewpoints– an anthology of moments where we become aware of ourselves, our environment and the diversity of the relationships that constitute our experience of the world. Developed in response to these contexts, the formal articulation of her ideas draw on the affective power of colour, shape and texture as a point of connection to more subjective imaginative realities.
