João Leal e Alexandra Rafael

Residency

The project Apneia presents the result of the work developed in its 1st artistic residency by Alexandra Rafael and João Leal. The exhibition explores the crossing and dialogue of the constructed objects from (and in consequence) the research of each artist. On one side Alexandra Rafael deals with the concept of action as emotional and/or material transformation, supporting and dragging in her drawings both the weight of her memory and the fragility of its construction. On the other side, João Leal explores the relationship with the public itself, where people are the activators of a filmic image sequence construction, supported by analogue mechanisms. The exhibition reveals itself as a common place of transformation and restlessness between the chaos of constructing an image and the sublimation of its end.

Apneia is a platform developed by the artists Hugo Soares, João Gigante and Reis Valdrez, centred in supporting the production and theorization of Plastic Arts by creating artistic residencies. Aiming to summon distinct individualities united by a common artistic thinking, each residence is programed by the dialogues between the participant artists and the exhibition of the developed works. Promotes the connection of emerging artists with more experienced ones, the production of cultural objects and the maintenance of critical and theoretical thinking. Each residence starts with a pressure test exhibition in Árvore, and ends with a final exhibition at Maus Hábitos, where artists display the results of their residency.
